[Solved] Is my CVT transmission shuddering?

I have a 2019 honda civic , with 27k miles. I notice that when the car slows down to 20mph, i feel the car shuddering. I never had this problem before, and it is not consistent. Should i have the fluid changed?

Hey everyone it turns out that after the ATF was change(which the dealer charger me 300$) The shuddering stopped and now the tranny seems to be working fine.

Thanks for reporting back. $300 is a bloody ripoff, but the important thing is that your transmission is now working normally.

I agree with @InThrustWeTrust Absolute ripoff. Honda CVT fluid is cheap, and it doesn’t need much of it (usually it’s 4 quarts, always check how much you actually drained) the process is simple.
-
$300 AFT changes are usually what it costs in some rare/luxury cars, definitely not a Civic.
-
Go to an independent mechanic, as you might want to consider changing your CVT fluid every 20k miles or earlier…
-
if it got contaminated to the point of causing issues at only 27k this might indicate a manufacturing flaw, so getting rid of it might not be a terrible idea, I’ve been saying for a very long time Honda’s aren’t invincible like they used to be
-
On so many cars you can drive even 125k miles and not feel that you should change the fluid

I agree with @InThurstWe Trust that 300$ is way too much, but it did fix the problem. I still feel alittle worrisome bc I brought a Civic because the 2015 Civic that I had gave me absolutely no problem. I never took it to a repair shop except for oil change. I do hear a a faith clunk when the car in slowing down from 2nd to 1 gear. What does that? Anyone???

Unusual at that mileage.  I would call the dealer service and ask if there are any software updates or recalls.

They will want to scan the computer for any malfunctions.  Make sure fluid level is correct.  Check the vent isn't clogged/broken.

If everything checks out, it would still be a good idea to change the fluid, if only for peace of mind.

And the shudder could be something else altogether.

Traction control activating makes the car shudder. Especially if one wheel hits a little loose gravel on the road while braking.

@carlos mfjaz's comment is here for you.

Is there such a thing as a decent CVT?  Anybody?

I would never buy a CVT to begin with.

That is a correct statement for sure.

Right now the best ones (in North America) - and this is relative to the rest of the competition - are from Honda. Toyota has some potential with their newer ones (with launch gear) but still too new to comment; their older ones had some issues. But in general, I would say to stay away from them if you plan to keep the vehicle for as long as possible: but if you had to get one, the Honda ones are not bad but their engines (smaller turbo I4) I am not thrilled about.

As far as I know the DAF Variomatics were pretty good, but those were last used around 30 years ago.

@Doc
Nope, not really…
The best one IMO is the old Prius CVT.
not because the CVT is good - but cause the hybrid system helps to avoid causing any wear to the gearbox, and as a bonus the petrol engine made only about 75hp.
(It avoids causing wear by using the electric motor for accelerations from a standstill, low speed driving, and most other driving cases that are known to wear out CVT transmissions)
-
But I still recommend to avoid CVTs - just get a regular conventional automatic with 4-6 gears (maybe 8 on specific models).

As a 2019 with low miles you may still have warranty.....check it out!

Carlos,

you mentioned "check the vents to see if it clogged" where are these vents?

Please put your comment underneath Carlos's answer.

Not sure exactly. Should be somewhere near the top of the transmission. A black rubber plug with small vent holes. Mine is L shaped.

Well pray it's not ur CVT going bad and u should be able to have it sorted out since it's relatively new and it should be under warranty. Honda usually makes decent CVTs from the 2016 and up civics (2015 and below were mediocre IMO based on a 2015 civic we rented). It's not like the Kia and Hyundai CVTs which are IMO the worst ones (used to be the Nissan Jatco CVTs) on the market based on the failures ranging between 600-10 000 miles.

What speed does it occur at? Is the clunking coming from the transmission or elsewhere? A new CVT (heck the whole car) shouldn’t be clunking with less than 30,000 miles.

Was this car inspected before purchase for signs of earlier wreck damage?

Something seems odd..

InThrust we trust

I brought the car brand new from Honda. So the clucking happens when the car shifts from a high speed down to 20mph and again down to 10mpg. It is a faint clunk that can be heard under the driver seat I did not notice this when I brought the car in December 2019
