Hi all- considering a used F150 in the near future (2018+). No specific truck in mind other than the crew cab, 4x4, and V8.
My question is I've seen Scotty mention a few times that the Ford/GM 10 speed has had issues. Has the 10 speed reliability improved over time and if not, what is the expected lifespan before rebuild is necessary?
This truck may be used for towing a camper. I don't expect to do any off-roading.
@mod_man :
"I just finished suing Ford Motor Company last year over my brand new 2019 F-150 with the 5.0L. The thing fell apart almost immediately. I also owned 2 Mustangs with the 5.0L and 10 speed trans...an '18 with and a '19 Cali Special. I babied both. Both developed the tick, both consumed oil. When I say they consumed oil, I don't mean they "sipped" oil. I mean they were drinking a quart every 1,000 miles.
My F-150 had 6k miles on it ... when I finally won my lawsuit and returned it...
Those Coyote 5.0's have a huge issue: Ford decided NOT to use steel sleeves for the pistons and instead used a crappy spray in liner that fails. It was being used on the Shelby models for years with success. However, those were limited production. When they started using that process on mass-produced vehicles, the quality dipped and all kinds of wonderful things started to happen. I actually had liquid oil from the motor blowing out both my tailpipes. How that is possible, I do not know. I also noticed the car ate coolant like mad but never leaked or overheated.
I drive a Honda now and will never own another Ford....nor will my friends and family."
And guess what, the most common issue I found on carcomplaints is "Excessive oil consumption"
Average occurence: 5600 miles
It doesn't sound like owners are too happy about the newer F-150s.
But at this point in time, I would say the Tundra (6 speed auto) would be a lot more reliable than the F-150 (10 speed auto).
it seems that less gears an automatic has, the better.
I get the impression that Ford trannies are the most likely to self destruct. Many within the first year or two.
Pass on it if you value your money.
Nope, kinks have still not been worked out of that 10 speed. My rancher friends that tow for a living say it’s garbage and there is a class action for it going on. A guy in PA had a 2019 ranger, the 10 speed gave out right in the middle of a busy intersection. Of course Ford, like every other manufacturer, has an excuse for why they are making a garbage product.
In terms of long term longevity, the jury is still out. That also includes Toyota’s Aisin 10-speed transmissions. We will have to wait a few more years to see how the 10-speeds hold up over time from all the different automakers.
