I have a 2005 Ford F-150 Supercab 4x4 with 5.4L Triton engine automatic transmission with 124,000 miles. I am using it to tow a travel trailer at approximately 75% or less of towing capacity. I need a new remanufactured transmission. Should I get the OEM remanufactured or an aftermarket remanufactured transmission. Shop states aftermarket is best bet as, if there was a problem with original design, the aftermarket would have an improvement. Whereas the OEM would have the original issue. Truck is in otherwise great shape, no rust, I want to keep for a long time.
What did you decide to do? Just curious is all? I read the 3valve engine 5.4l v8 ford came out w in 2004 continued using till I dunno past the 2010's was one of the worst engines made. What was the original problem w the tranny you were wanting to replace? Sometimes if you just upgrade the fluid to something like red line high heat atf or similar quality and do a flush of the old fluid you can get the tranny back to working fine. And doing tranny fluid changes every 30 k or sooner if you're hard on it. Or at least that's my very limited experience and opinion.
I would get the OEM.
I disagree with yaser on this one. I would go with a warranted, reman unit from Gearstar, TCI or Monster Transmission which offer more upgrades and beefier components than Ford ever will. All you're getting from Ford is the same as what you already have.
