Hi I am driving a Toyota Matrix 2011 for a while for a family of 4 (2 young kids).  I am planning to replace it with an used car in the near future. What are some of your recommendations?  I am looking for more spacious, reliable trouble free for an used car. Thx!

@canadaeric
I would look at a highlander or maybe a Honda Pilot I have a 2012 pilot with 130,000 miles and it’s still running and driving smooth as a dream

If the kids are small (shorter than, say, 5'3" for the next few years), the best deals to be had are not on CUVs, but hatchbacks. You have almost as much cargo space and the fuel economy and handling are much better too. Mazda 3 is the nicest one in that niche imho, but Honda Civic is the value leader. Can't go wrong with either one (although I just remembered that the 1.5 liter Honda engine had some oil dilution issues, so if it were me, I'd narrow it down to the Mazda or look at the non-turbo Honda).

Here's Scotty on the oil-dilution problems with the 1.5 turbo Honda engine that's in quite a few Civics, Accords, and CRVs:

It depends on a lot of factors, such as what your preferences are, what do you want, what features you may want/expect, you financial resources available for vehicle purchase including trade-in value of your existing vehicle. Also, your location can be a major factor, such as do you operate in snowy/icy conditions in winter, or do you operate in warmer southern climates. But without further details, I would start with a Toyota Camry, and 2016 is a particularly good year for used Camry's with low miles. Another good choice may be a Honda Accord 2015 or newer (4 cylinder, not V6), but for your family and the request for more space, I wouldn't consider a Civic. I would avoid Nissan, after 3-4 years reliability goes through the floor. Also, older Hyundai's and Kia's have lots of quality and reliability issues, even when new ! Family vehicles from GM can be a crap-shoot: sometimes you get lucky and find a good one, usually you get stuck with a money pit.

But then again, it's hard to make meaningful recommendations without more information.

The Toyota Sienna's are always a good choice.

Sooo many things to consider (budget, traveling, commuting, carrying capacity). Plus you need to enjoy driving it in that way you will take great care of it. While Highlanders and Pilots are great they are big. Rav4 or a CRV are good choices as well. You just need to prioritize your needs.

Thanks for all your recommendations. Let me try to be more specific.  I am looking for an used car under 10k for a family of 4. My wife complains a lot about the harsh ride of the Matrix. It needs to be reliable and dependable for long and short trips.  Camry or Rav 4 is the obviously choice but would like to hear others opinions. thx!

@canadaeric
Prius and other hybrids are also worth considering, esp. as they tend to have high sidewall tires which translates to a pleasant ride. If you have a short commute (<10 miles), you might want to look at the Prius Prime which can go 1000 miles between fillups as batteries can take care of most travel needs.

I'd say if you want space and reliability, either a new or gently used Sienna van might work.  If you don't want a van, maybe a Highlander or possibly a RAV4 (if you want to stay within the Toyota brand).

It depends on many things, how much can you afford or want to pay, what type of class of vehicle are you looking for, and what things you use your vehicle for. If you can afford a Toyota than that is what you should get, just avoid the 2.4L Inline 4 cylinder Toyota's as they have an oil consumption problem.

@toyotasrule
A lot of Toyotas use 2.4. That leaves 1.8 for small cars and V6. V6 the better choice?

@toyotasrule
Future is 4 cylinders, V6 or inline-6 will be luxury/performance vehicles and V8 will be for the exotics (latest gen Porsche Panamera added V8 after 2-3 years and it's an ultra-rare exotic that costs more than a house: 200K). Research money is going into 4 cylinders, even Benz S class will likely get a 4 cylinder soon. Sound will not be as pleasing but hey you gotta adjust to facts of the world.

CanadaErick, I would say that the V6 is a better choice if you are looking at Toyota's with the 2.4L and the V6 is an option.  The 2.5L found in 2010 and up Toyota's are very good though. Also Highlanders and Tacomas with the 2.7L don't have oil consumption problems either. The 2.7L 4 cylinder engine is very good and reliable, very few problems.

mazda_787b, Yes that is true about what you said that 4 cylinders are the future, I was just saying to avoid the 2.4L 4 cylinder because of oil consumption problems, the 2.5L 4 cylinder is a great engine that has little to no issues. Don't forget thought that V6's, inline-6's, and V8's should still be in trucks.

We have 2 Honda Accord that have been reliable, roomy, comfortable, and dare I say Sporty (fast) family cars.  Both 4 cylinders.
