Firewall Vin different than Dash Vin

Hey I have a 2010 Odyssey and the Vin on the firewall is different than the Vin on the dash. The firewall Vin comes up a 2008 Odyssey with a salvage certificate not even registered or anything.

Just bought it wondering if I should keep it and just ignore it.

I checked Vin before buying and the title matched the door jam and dash just doesn't match firewall, oh and neither the engine I plugged in a scanner and it's showing its a 2008 but suppose to be a 2010

Wow. The exact same problem was posted last week

Is someone chopping up old Odysseys out there?

Well I can't sell it like this and it drives fine.

Would I get thrown in jail if ever pulled over and they found out somehow?

Ever heard that phrase "License and Registration"? As long as you have a legal registration with you, you'll be fine.

If ever caught how do the laws work.

Look up the laws in your state, or better yet consult an attorney.

If you're that concerned about it though I'd just get rid of the stupid thing and buy something else, being a heck of a lot more careful this time so you don't get taken again. That hack job not likely to last very long anyway.

It's a 14 year old car. As long as the VIN on the dash matches the VIN on the title you have nothing to worry about.

99.9999% of car buyers would never even think about cross referencing VINs on different parts of a car. The law doesn't expect you to do that.

So you have no liability.

For your own curiosity, The National Insurance Crime Bureau offers a free VIN check to determine whether a vehicle was ever reported stolen or damaged to the point where it was issued a salvage title. NICB offers up to five free VIN checks from one IP address within a 24-hour period, using data supplied by car insurance companies.

So you could research both of those VINs using this website to see if anything comes up

I'm scared of even driving it now, like what if I get pulled over and they see it's been changed and i get thrown in jail for years for something I didn't even do 🙁

That's unlikely to happen as long as the VIN on your registration matches the VIN visible on the dashboard and in the door jamb. (I doubt they are going to pop the hood to look at the firewall or hook up a scan tool unless there is an anomaly clearly visible with a cursory check.)

I'd be more concerned that you have a salvaged, patched-together Frankenstein vehicle that could start falling apart at any time. I'd get rid of it for that reason alone.

Actually just looked at carfax the vin on firewall says it's a beige color, yet vin on dash and door jam say color grey

You may well have to have to scrap it and eat the loss.

What is the specific charge that you would expect to be jailed for? You're not defrauding anyone, you're the one who was defrauded.

Had a friend of a friend buy a vehicle that was reported stolen. He ended up in jail for 6 months.

How do you know yours has been reported stolen?

It is not I just checked

I was just saying that person didn't steal the car he bought yet he was charged and jailed.

Just as I didn't change the vins.

I am thinking about keeping it as I need a ride to work. If ever caught how do the laws work. Can they just charge and jail me because I'm driving it. Or do they need proof I messed with vins.

if you transferred the title and it's registered to you, and you're not aware of any shady business then that's it . Your responsibility ends there. Relax.
