Hello, i live in europe and i want to buy my first car.
What do you think about Toyota Auris 2008 with diesel 1.4 engine?

I would start out with what exactly do you want out of a car? Fun to drive? Cheap to operate and maintain? Safety? A car is a big investment, so it's always good to make sure it fits the role you want so you will love it. Just my $.02

HI, my priority is to buy a car which is cheap, reliable and has an avarage room for passangers

Great choice.

I am not so optimistic 😀

Apparently I am and I prefer to be.

Meh. 1.4 Diesel engines are reliable but won't blow your head off. The Auris is practical but not comfortable to good handling or anything. If he likes it he should buy it.

But still monitor oil level. Engine can be thirsty of it. Anyway he decides at the end.

@kerem-umut-kerem I do not know for 1st generation but the Auris I have, handles very well and still has decent comfort if you are not too picky. And I do not drive slowly, even when it comes to cornering if possible

@g-t
The Toyota Auris is the same car with minor differences as the Scion IM right? How is the steering, ride, driving dynamics etc.?

I know it looks same as Scion IM but I can't tell you what's the difference between them when comes to driving because I have never driven one. They were not sold in Europe. It does not have all the bells and whistles like more luxurious cars but it still rides well, has responsive steering, corners well. I only miss more power, AWD and two backup lights.

The Auris is basically a Corolla.

And my top recommendations for first cars, new or used are either a Corolla or a Civic because of there time tested quality and reliability (for the most part).

So the Auris sounds like an excellent first car.

Not the first generation.

Tnx, I wanted to hear that 🙂

What I know about in Europe is that the 1.4 Diesel is a very reliable engine and the Auris is a Corolla hatchback like the Matrix/IM series. Should be good but it is not my style because it is practical but not comfortable or sporty in a way. If YOU like it then have a mechanic check it out and if it is in good shape it could be a good first car.

Tnx, It is not my style either but for the first car reliability is mayor + low fuel consumption

Hello there!

For a short period of time, I would say no problem. If you plan to keep it for a long time, I suggest you stay away from it. This model came out 2 years before. First few years of a generation are the worst, since issues reveal during usage of cars by owners. I advise you take a look last 2 years of a generation.

If you still want that car, make sure it was repaired under recalls because this generation had several of them (Click for more info).

On this site you will also find interesting information about 1st generation of Auris (Click). 1.4 D-4D is 1ND-TV engine.

1st generation of Auris was also on my list of possible cars. Now I'm glad I didn't decide for it.

Good luck!

Anyway roadtest it. If you like it, let a mechanic check it.

Allright tnx

I have one more car in mind.

Skoda octavia mk1 with 1.9 TDI diesel engine, manual.

Is it better choice, because in my area there are much more parts for vw group cars and it is easier to sell one later?

The 1.9L Pump duse TDI engine with a manual, in the old Octavia is bulletproof! I have seen them running with 500,000 kms. Of course, you need to realise the rest of the car is still a Skoda. But since you’re in Europe, parts should be cheap & easy to find.
No matter which car you buy, get it checked out by a reputed mechanic, before you buy it.
Good luck!

Much better choice if you manage to find one with REAL low km. Octavias are among the brands that have the most likely manipulated odometer.

Fully agreed on the rolled back odometers. The old diesel Octavias are kind of the Corollas of Europe. Not as reliable, but very close.
