I'm a volunteer first responder and I'm looking for a car that is like the models that cops use or that other first responders use. I wanna be able to easily deck it out with lights and it should have the recognition so that people will actually move outta the way if I have my lights on 🙁
1. An old Crown Vic
2. Dodge Charger Pursuit
Do NOT buy the Ford junk. The Taurus loses the motor when the water pump goes out (long story but plenty of info out there about it) and the Explorer Pursuit is action packed with misery...electricals, fumes in the cabin, on and on.
My younger brother is a Sheriff's Deputy. He swears by the Crown Vic for reliability. The Caprice is fast but junk, the Dodge is ok, and the Tahoes drink gas like you wouldn't believe.
Unless you are official you can not put lights on a vehicle like that.
I'm a volunteer fireman from Ny...we are allowed lights
Okay, since that allow that, I would assume you could speak with the department and perhaps they can point you in the right direction.
Just to clarify...you can put lights on anything you want as long as you do not use them on a public roadway. Laws regarding public roads vary from state to state. I mention this because I have a Crown Vic P71 Interceptor fully decked out as an undercover unit with radio, spots, Whelen lights/push bar, etc. and it is 100% legal so long as the lights are not operated on a public roadway. Definitely check regulations for where you are, but as a volunteer fireman in Texas you are allowed red and clear lights. Red and blue is supposed to be LEO only, but many construction vehicles here (private vehicles driven on construction sites and in construction zones) are decked out red and blue as well. Just be sure you stick to your allowed colors and you'll be fine.
I should have been more specific when I said lights. I believe in most states your are allowed to have the lights but not use them in a manor in which a person believes you're an official, like you stated as on a public road.
You might be surprised at the first responder vehicle that Hurst supplied with the Jaws of Life when that product debuted, but unfortunately I don't think it would work out very well these days.
