[Solved] Starting 2017 Honda Civic Si in Cold Temperatures (-15C/5F)

Hey Scotty,

I’ve got a 2017 Honda Civic Si, bone stock, with just over 60,000 miles.

This week the normally temperate Vancouver has been hit with a true Canadian winter. This morning I had to start my car in -15C/5F. Not the type of cold I’ve ever really seen.

The car fired up after two cranks, which is well within normal. However my clutch and brake pedals were a bit sticky for the first 10 miles. I warmed it up for roughly 4 minutes and everything seemed to operate fine. Since I’m contemplating a move where this weather is more regular, my question is this. When is a block heater necessary? And what type of damage can regularly starting a ice cold block cause? Especially pertaining to a Turbocharged GDI engine (oil less than a month old)

Hope you had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

Heck if it stays that cold I'd put a block heater in

2008 Vancouver -15C

2016 Kootenays -30C

If you haven't been to the prairies, or up North, you have no idea what a "True Canadian Winter" is.
