Fix or buy another

I have an 09 gmc 1500 that needs a motor. The truck has 170000 miles on it and is super clean. I’ve gotten a couple quotes for a new engine ranging from $4800 to $5600. I just had the transmission rebuilt should I sink the money into the engine or buy something else that’s going to be over priced

1) How bad do you need a truck?

2) Assuming it is fixed, how long is the truck expected to last?

3) Considering the above two questions, is it more cost effective to buy a reliable new or used truck that is expected to last (Toyota) versus the truck you have now?

I’m in pretty bad need for one I wouldn’t even question buying a new one but since prices are nuts and the availability is non existent on what I would want I just can’t decide on what to do

Don't forget that some dealers are jacking up the price of a new vehicle several thousand dollars above the MSRP. If I understood Scotty, a lot of the newer vehicles are more flash than reliable. If it were me, I'd put a new engine in the truck. Especially considering how jacked up the prices are on both new and used vehicles.

Put a New engine in
You've already fixed the trans
Plus, you know how well you maintained your truck
A lot of people are in the same boat as you and the consensus is new motor over new car
(obviously assuming rust is non existent or minimal)
I've heard many stories of the newer PU's failing in the first couple years
If you're handy, suspension, brakes etc, can be self performed
I'm wheeling:
08 xterra
00 frontier
04 350z
67 datsun
82 vw van (Subaru motor)
So Im not a fan of anything newer than 2010 (my opine)

As I start seeing the complexity of 2020’s new cars, even Toyotas, it’s like flashbacks to how complex my 2007 BMW X5 was. I kinda wish they made simpler cars these days without all the fancy stuff. But it seems the mass market prefers the fancier features.

If you can afford a new truck and can find a new Toyota truck at msrp then I think buying a new Toyota truck wouldn't be a bad option especially if you use a truck a lot. But I would stay away from used because used prices are extremely ridiculous unless you can find a very good deal.

I almost always fix the one I have rather than buying another set of problems with another vehicle and another "journey of disappointment."

What's wrong with your existing engine?  What would be the cost of rebuilding it instead of replacing it?

Its usually more cost effective to replace rather than rebuild
Many shops I know of dont want to bother rebuilding engines
Aftermarket parts quality is questionable as well
