Looking to buy a new 4x4 offroad drive truck/suv under $35k, not CVT, need advice on what is reliable?
I am interested in the Chevy Colorado and Ford Maverick 2.0 EcoBoost in particular, and I'm considering the Mazda CX-5, but I am open to other recommendations as well. Thanks!
The purpose built off roaders are the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco. But you said reliable. So that takes those out of the contention.
The 4Runner would be the best bet, but I think it is out of the price range.
The CX-5 isn’t an off-roader, IMHO. It’s kinda the same class as the RAV4 and the CRV, except the RAV4 and CRV have some mild off roading chops.
The Honda Passport may be a contender. It is a step up from the RAV4 and CRV, but not as good as the 4Runner.
And then we have the Subaru’s, which most are built for the trails. Forester/Outback.
In terms of off road worthiness:
Bronco > Wrangler > 4Runner > Forester/Outback > Passport > RAV4 > CRV >>> CX-5
In terms of reliability:
Toyota/Honda > Subaru/Mazda > Ford/Jeep
These are broad strokes. Of course the details may vary per make and model.
Landcruiser, Tacoma trumps all of those.
I would forget these trucks. If you are looking for a pickup truck that can do mild off-roading, I would suggest the Toyota Tacoma. Mazda CX-5 is a decent vehicle, but you have to consider the naturally aspirated engine has a cylinder deactivation system. And the turbo-charged engine version doesn't last long. So it's best to buy it 2017 and before. I would also consider Toyota Rav4 for mild offroading. Test drive the vehicles suggested and see what vehicle is for you.
