Hi Scotty, What are your views on the banning of sales of new gas powered cars starting in 2035

I live in California and was beyond upset when I heard that, although I anticipated the bone heads in Sacramento would do that.  I guess they are OK with people leaving their state.

Not going to get into it in depth since this is not a political discussion site, but obviously this does impinge on people's cars. Not necessarily just in the Peoples' Republic since their craziness tends to spread out to other states as well.

This will not end well. They can't even provide for the state's power needs now, let alone a fleet of millions of battery electric vehicles. That state has literally become an insane asylum run by the inmates.

Sooner or later, a straw will break the camel's back.  I agree with @chucktobias that there are better sites to talk about the political angle, but there are practical implications outside politics as pertains to general car ownership.

California is far from alone in this; there are a few jurisdictions in the EU going the same way.  The problem that we will eventually run into is that the places phasing out gas powered cars will someday reach critical mass.  Where I live (TX), you can buy an EV if you want, or ICE if you want (as it should be).  There are no places (that I know of) where plans are in the works to outlaw EVs.  That means in 15 years time, manufacturers will face a choice between building EVs, which they can sell everywhere, and ICE vehicles, which will only be sold in certain places.  To make a profit in that scenario, the only option they will have is to convert all (or at least most) of their manufacturing to EV.  Even if ICE is legal where you live, buying a new one will only get harder.

Contra all this, despite all the hype, EVs are underperforming sales projections market-wide.  EVs really are not yet an everyman's car (just a plaything for the affluent).  That reality may eventually set in, though I doubt it because the execs at all the big manufacturer's are all affluent, and all their friends are affluent, and none of them care about "everyman".  The other factor that may eventually impact all this is that even though CA is mandating EVs, they are not mandating increased power production or new battery factories.  So the math may eventually max out the number of cars that can be made and run (which in CA means the rich will drive EVs and the poor drive nothing.)

The only possible solution I see is if certain large states (TX, FL) push back and outlaw EVs.  The manufacturers would have to keep making ICE cars.

But none of us individually can make that happen.  So the practical approach is to: buy an ICE vehicle (and an extra one) and maintain it religiously - as though they are the last cars you'll ever buy.

I always thought there was a nationwide federal ban on ICE already in place by 2035. So I was surprised that California came up with something. Maybe the details differ?! IDK.

With that said, it’s a dumb law. I’m not against EV’s, but I am against their mandate.

I’m also against the ban of ICE. It’s dumb.

It's just some nonsense politics for keeping those "we care about the environment" groups happy. It's not going to get anywhere as it's just not practically possible. California had electric outages so how in the world do they want to provide both electricity for houses etc. and the added strain of everyone charging their electric cars. I live in WA State so I hear this same nonsense constantly and again it's just ridiculous nonsense. You know getting the material needed for the batteries cause a lot of pollution too but they're packaging it differently to make people believe it's less than gasoline. Also add to this do you really think those oil companies will give up on the profit they make from selling gasoline and the price hikes?! They won't let this happen.

And mechanically speaking it's not feasible either. Like 18 wheel electric trucks?! I just can't imagine that working out. I think the reality is we might see more hybrid cars and I am not against those at all. I have a Rav4 Prime and it's great for my city driving. So realistically speaking the future can be hybrid cars, but fully electric and forcing people to go fully electric I think is just politics and won't really happen.

Yes. RAV4 Prime is the way they should have gone. Most of the benefits of EV, but will still run when the wind stops spinning the turbines. Problem is that all the celebrities and wealthy political donors would rather drive a Tesla than a Toyota. Not as cool in their circles.

So true. Tesla is a lot about the image of "I care about the environment" and so many people want that image and being "cool".
