Hello Scotty, my name is Franklin,

I have a 2000 Honda accord LX with 200,213 miles on it and I have noticed when I change the oil, after about a week or so, I smell burning oil coming through the air vents. This happens at random as well, normally after idling for a period of time, and I am unsure what the cause is. My family and I have babied the car since we got it from a rental place back in 2001. General maintenance, oil changes every 3000 miles, regular filter changes, etc. (By the way, my dad is very adamant about changing the oil in vehicles every 3k miles even though you can change it every 6k miles or so)

I also have an SRS light on the dash of the car that won't go out. My dad who was a heavy mechanic brought home a Genesis EVO scan tool that threw a code for the right passenger seatbelt latch. When we inspected it, we did not find anything wrong with the latch. What could be the cause of this?

Another thing about the Honda, I started working from home in July of 2020 due to the pandemic and haven't driven it since. What would you recommend for me to do with this car as far as maintenance? Or any car for that matter that has sat for a long period of time?

My other question is my family bought a 2017 Subaru Forester with I believe 30k miles and it's up to 58k miles now. It had a brand new transmission put in at 28k miles. We also bought this car from a rental place. My question is what would you recommend as far as oil changing intervals? 3k miles? 6k miles?

I apologize for the long post as I like to give as much detail as possible when explaining stuff.

Thank you,

Franklin James

What was the exact airbag code? Do you still remember?

For the oil smell in Honda, check the valve cover gasket. About theSRS light, it should have something to do with the airbags. Have a pro scan it.
For the oil change, you may change the oil every 5k miles. For the Subaru, make sure you change the transmission fluid as welling if it is CVT, change it every 30-40k miles.

Sorry for the late reply,

I will check that and if it becomes too much for me to handle, I will take it to a reputable mechanic. I know of one in my town. He is just like Scotty.

Thank you VERY much for the information Yaser.

Thank you,

Franklin James

You’re welcome and good luck.
