Just got my 1997 Toyota Camry 144k miles, back from an oil change. They evaluated that my tires were at 4/32. I live in Minnesota and maybe put on 5 to 6k a year. Should I get new tires for my car for the winter?
If the tires you have are all season type, … legal limit for winter driving is, indeed 4/32 in many jurisdictions. Also, 4/32 is a highly recommended limit for rain, … but this is not a law that I’m aware of. Dry limit is 2/32 ( wear down to wear indicator strips), … and it is a law in most places.
Best practice, however, is: … at 4/32 start shopping for a new set, be it summer tire set, winter tire set or all season tire set.

Thanks everyone, ordered some new generals for my car. I had a chance to get 25% off of them at my work, so I went for it.
I imagine you get a lot of snow there. New tires will definitely help your traction and keep you from getting stuck.
That's pretty low tread for a place with possible snow on the roads.
