[Solved] getting a temporary car

My 2005 ford focus with 193,000 is starting to turn into a money pit. I need to replace the thermostat that is stuck open (with the check engine code p0128), thermostat t hose, radiator fans, an obnoxiously loud squeaking noise that I can't seem to find, and the front struts need to be replaced. I wanted a temporary car until I get a better one.

I found a 2 owner 1998 Toyota Avalon for $1300 with 276,115 miles on it. I also found a 2000 Toyota Solara for $1500 with 139,000 miles on it. I'll be checking out them out today to see the condition of them.

If both check out, which would be a more reliable car? Or should I stick to my current car until the wheels fall off?

Solara.  If everything checks out, it could potentially be a longer term temporary car.  139,000 miles is almost nothing for a 20 year old car.  That's like 7000 miles per year.

Get the Solara, you can always sell it for and not loss but a few hundred dollars.

Yeah the Focus tends to turn into endless moneypits. Honda and Toyota make excellent cars but as you discovered it can be hard finding cheap ones. The two that you found may be good enough where they are only going to be temporary cars. If not see if you can find a good Suzuki because you can usually pick them up all day long for next to nothing. If you can't find one I would look at Subaru and Mazda as they still tend to be cheaper than Honda and Toyota.

Why don't you rent a car while you find a better one. 1500 doesn't get you much. If a mechanic says they are ok I'd go with the Solara though.

I would also choose the Solara.

I would get the Solara.  It will stay about the same in terms of resale value.

Well, I checked out both cars. The Avalon drove like a boat and heard a creaking noise at every movement. The Solara had a misfire on cylinder one and I barley got down the road. The Solara also had way more mileage than advertised as well.

270000 miles sounds pretty abused

yeesh that's like choosing between three ugly sisters. Get a bicycle or bus pass.

Find a Buick LeSabre with the 3800 V6.

The market is irrational and Clunker Toyotas tend to be overpriced.

It might be easier to sell the clunker Toyota when your main car is repaired.
