Got an incorrect diagnosis from a shop

Hey Scotty I have a 2014 Tundra I just purchased a month ago. I got a PO500 code. I took it to my shop and they told me i needed an abs module. I paid a $125 diagnostic fee and decided to take it back to the dealer I purchased it from. They only found a loose connection tab to the ABS module. I returned to my shop and politely told them what happened and asked for a refund of my diagnostic fee. They were very rude and disrespectful to me and said they would think about it and basically said don't come back. I have given them several thousand dollars in repairs over a course of 12 years and we always have had nice, cordial interactions in the past. Was  I wrong to ask for a refund? I told them we all mistakes and I just wanted some responsibility taken for the mistake.

When you ask a shop or mechanic to 'check out' a problem.. you just agreed to pay them a fee for only that.

If you have them do your work, they might deduct part or all of the fee but they certainly don't have to. It's SOP.

the diagnostic fee is for scanning your vehicle. They scanned your vehicle and provided the code. They fulfilled their contract. The equipment they use and the skill to use it costs a lot of money. Of course they didn't give all your money back. It's true the replacement advice was bad, but that's the risk you take. They will still take a hit, because you won't return to do business, and maybe people you talk to, right?

Now, if they had replaced your ABS module and it didn't need it, then you would be entitled to have them reverse it and refund the cost.

@imperator I scanned the code myself and got the code. I took it to them to diagnosis the problem. Their diagnosis is wrong. I understand your point Sir but getting nasty at me for pointing it out was wrong. I embarrassed them and they took it out on me verbally.

Sorry I missed that part. But a good mechanic doesn't take customer advice at face value, and scans the vehicle themselves, not to mention some other steps (verifying electrical system, network connectivity, etc). They are employing their time and services as mechanics (good or bad) to assess your vehicle . That is why you are in their shop, and that is what you're paying for . Otherwise, you would undoubtedly fix it yourself.

Their diagnosis is wrong

Again, that's a risk you assume as a customer. Nobody guarantees 100% accuracy. Auto diagnostics is not a perfect science.

getting nasty at me

obviously that's very unprofessional and undeserved because you said you approached them respectfully. But still doesn't legally entitle you to a refund. Just take it as a learning experience. Use social media to share your experience.
