Hello group,

I have a Toyota Corolla e150 1.6 124PS (dual vvt) 1ZR-FE with a 5 speed manual.

I think I have a problem with first gear. When the car is at a standstill or moving really slow and put it in first gear, there are no problems even if I rev up the engine press the clutch, and engage first (to spin up the input shaft) no grinding whatsoever. When the car moves (2 MPH or more) and try to engage first it makes a grinding noise and engages eventually.

My question is, do these Toyotas even have synchros on first gear since it sounds a bit different than others while accelerating or driving in first or the synhcro is just worn out? The car has 110K miles, all other gears work ok. I also noticed that when the car is at a standstill, press the clutch it is hard to engage 3rd and 5th, not sure if is by design this way.

Also changed to gearbox fluid, it is full with 75W-90 fully synthetic gl4 mobil1

Regards,

Ivan

Well yeah you're synchron first gear is starting to go out baby it had a car like that and I still drove it for years and sold it to someone else and they drove it for years

Just come to a stop before shifting back into first gear. Avoid grinding gears and the trans will still last a long time. It used to be very common for cars to come with an unsynchronized first gear from the factory.

Ist gear synchro is getting old.  Check all your clutch adjustments to make sure you're getting full disengagement.  Only put it in first when you're stopped, it'll last longer.  Don't drive with your hand on the shift lever.

Thank you all for the answers. Yes will only shift when stopped, most likely the synchro is just worn out. It would too strange to has an unsynchronized first gear as my older 94 car has. It is also strange that it sounds a bit different from other gears, sounds a bit like you're in reverse.
