Dear Scotty,
YOUR THE MAN!
My sister lives in Florida, I live in Indiana and her 2010 Buick La cross with 85000 miles continues to drain her very tight budget. She’s 5’1” , and 75 years old. She drives local most of the time, but wants to drive here once a year or to Carolina’s once or twice a year.
lm willing to spend 16-17k for a later model very dependable car. I’ve driven Toyotas since 1990. What would be my mileage limit be on a Camry le. She probably won’t drive 20,000 miles in next 10 years. Or should I go with a hertz “rent to buy” for 5 days to let a mechanic check it out . Then she could get a real good feel for the car.
Being 900 miles apart makes it difficult to shop.
Also she mentioned a Kia Soul 😳 The Corolla does have an adjustable driver seat for shorter people but I’m concerned about its transmission and she can’t drive a manual.
Any brand and advice?
Thanks
Gary
Toyota is generally a good choice but you need to avoid models and years that have problems. Don't even think about Hyundai/Kia products. Any used car you're serious about needs to be examined by a mechanic before purchase.
Thank you. I agree BUT the cars I’m finding in this price range are 80-90,000 miles and I’m wondering if that should concern me.
My father in law bought a new 2010 Avalon and it has over 200k miles and run like new
If properly taken care of most Toyota models are barely broken in at 80K-90K miles. You just need to avoid models that have inherent engine and transmission problems, and have a good mechanic check any prospects.

Don't attempt to buy cars from Hertz, the corporation doesn't care about their cars and people drive the heck out of them, because they're not theirs.
