Look at this site above. For example, you might want to consider a 2005-2006 or 2009 model year.
My pick would be ‘09, or ‘10. Still plenty of them around in my end of the woods (Calgary, Alberta), and pretty well all of them AWD … but you have to find one that was serviced regularly. Fluids, primarily! Oil, ATF, coolant, power steering, rear differential if AWD, brake fluid. It’s amazing! If that’s what one does, … that’s all it costs, … virtually no repairs. Just tires, brake pads, … and plenty of windshield washer!

You should have no trouble finding a CR-V with a naturally aspirated engine before Honda moved to the 1.5L turbo.
Another good choice would be the RAV4.
Pretty much any recent Toyota/Honda would be better than a 8yr old Passat.
No matter what you buy, have it thoroughly checked out by a reputed mechanic, before you buy it.
From 2002 to about 2018 or so the CR-V came with the 2.4 NA engine which in my opinion is one of the best engines Honda ever made.
