Hi, I just became a tech at car x auto repair what is the best all-around tool kit I should use? I plan to start my own shop. Where do I start and is a lift necessary for my shop?

Being an entry level guy at a chain automotive place like that they'll probably have you doing stuff like replacing batteries, changing oil, tires, and parts swaps like alternators, sensors, and solenoids.

It's a way to get your 1st job in auto repair to begin building a resume so maybe in a year you can get your foot into the door of a better repair shop. And then a better one. And then a better one.

Ask your store manager what tools you are expected to bring. Frankly, I'm surprised they expect entry level guys to furnish any of their own tools.

But while you are there, try to learn something specialized that you can take with you when you leave. If they do AC repair, do your best to learn that. They won't have the best AC guys working there but you'll get hands on experience which you can build on.

Most of these chain places read codes and swap parts. They're not good at diagnostics. But without any experience you have to start somewhere.

it's kinda hard to work on cars if you can't get under 'em isn't it?

I would be really interested in what type of training and experience was required to get a job as a "tech" at an auto repair shop.

When I worked as a "technician" at a discount store's shop back when working my way through college 50 years ago the only "qualifications" needed were knowing which end of a screwdriver to hold and a willingness to work for not much more than minimum wage.

Of course we were limited to tires and batteries so nothing too technical or requiring a whole lot of skill. I was told that a little before my arrival they tried getting into the aftermarket AC business, which was popular back then. That turned into a total disaster with some poor slob's car used as a guinea pig so they got out of that very quickly and went back to just tires and batteries.

Youtube mechanic "Rainman Ray" recently started his own shop so you might want to take a look at his channel, starting with this video:
