High RPM at first start up

Hi Scotty!

I have a 2008 Toyota Corolla 1.8 L with about 150000 miles on it. I bought it used last year with 1450000 miles on it for $5000. When I start it up first thing in the morning or whenever, it revs up to 2000 rpm, and then very slowly gets down to normal. What could be wrong with it? It has clean air filters, new engine oil, it is well maintained. It does it in all kinds of weather.

did it always do this?

It kind of always did it. When I had bought it, it usually revved up to 1800 rpm but it's making 2000 rpm since some weeks.

if it has an IAC valve, clean or replace it. It could be fouled up or worn out and slow to respond.

Thank you, would do that!

Nothing.

So you mean it is normal? Earlier it was around 1800 rpm but now it's 2000. I fear it might continue going up.

Could just be the colder weather causing a richer mixture and higher rpm issue.  Have you scanned it for codes?

It did the high rpm in summer as well. No I haven't checked it for any codes. The dash shows no warnings lights though.

Warning lights only illuminate when problems reach a certain level. It's quite possible that there would be stored codes or issues that would show up in live data without the check engine light turning on.
