[Solved] Honda Civic 2010 with screws to hold on rotors

Scotty, I apparently did not have the right tool to take off the rotors on my 2010 honda Civic. I ended up drilling the screws out. My other cars do not have these screws. Are they necessary for performance or safety? I ordered a Japanese type impact driver as I only did one side so far. Will the lug nuts be sufficient to hold the rotors on? Thanks

These screws are not terribly important. I keep them on my Hondas, though. These are pretty inexpensive to replace. And you right, you need a special drivers for these - JIS type, … Japanese Industrial Standard. Vessel is the best brand. Some of them are “hitable" with a hammer. You hit them on the end of handle and they twist counterclockwise internally, … making loosening screws a snap. Great design, I say. You use Phillips screwdriver on JIS fasteners and you strip them every time! In fact, all cross screws on Japanese cars are JIS. One should own a set if owning a Japanese car.

Btw, … those screw drivers are also called "motorcycle screw drivers". Who knew?

This must be that over-engineering Kaizen was talking about

Not really. If you take a close look at the detail geometry of JIS and equivalent Phillips screw driver, … you will see that JIS geometry is such that it addresses the problem of not stripping screw’s head. Draft angels are virtually eliminated with JIS tip. With Phillips, … not so.

Right, well I'm so glad that my rotor doesn't have screws in it, and that I don't have to buy Japanese screwdrivers to take them off! Lug nuts work just fine.

impact driver is what i use, select the tip you need, put in the end and you line it up with said screw  hit it with a hammer, impact driver compresses and twist in one movement "cracking" the screw or bolt you are trying to remove. old school method that rarely fails.
