Honda Pilot first generation 5 speed Automatice Transmission life

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2008 Honda Pilot. Drove it 4500 miles from Alaska to Alabama towing a 5x8 loaded Uhaul trailer.

4x4 Model EX -- 198,000 miles

3.5 L engine new timing belt before trip (runs like it’s brand new)

5 speed auto (shifts with no noise. Seems to rev a higher wile accelerating, but maybe my memory)

Just replaced front + rear brakes (only the second replacement since new!)

Only repairs: new alternator last year, new radiator at about 80,000, a couple of sensors

Everything works except the rear blower and a TPMS amber light goes on at times (who cares, a tire pressure gauge works great)

My questions are:

  • How long can these 5 speed auto transmissions last? I know you’ve said Honda Transmissions are weak. I’ve regularly changed transmission fluid every 30,000-35,000 or so miles. When the car was new, I had Honda install a hitch and they insisted on adding a transmission cooler. I never towed anything heavy, until my 4500-mile move last summer. Maybe the Transmission cooler was a good move after all?

  • I’m going to have new plugs installed soon when I hit 200,000 miles. Do I need to have the valves adjusted at that time? Engine is running amazing, but I’m sure Honda will recommend the adjustment.

Love, Love, Love your videos! I watch them all!

Honda transmissions are weak transmissions. Continue to drive conservatively and don't drive like a maniac.
