[Solved] 2017 Honda Pilot Going Reverse while in D

Hello everyone!

A coworker of mine has a 2017 Honda Pilot with 120k miles. She recently took her car to a shop for transmission work, because the car would jerk while accelerating. She took it to the dealer initially but they quoted her a new tranny for 7k. So she took it to this shop who promised to fix the problem by replacing the solenoids (and bunch of other stuff) for 3k.
She got the car back 1 week ago and it stalled on her yesterday. It went backwards while she put the car in Drive. That sounds very scary. I told her whatever the shop did to the car wasn’t right and they would have to take it back and fix it. She said when she got the car back 1 week ago, the transmission light was ON. And they just reset it and sent her away.

Does it sound like crappy mechanic work? Do you think it’s fixable? Should she just fix it to drive OK and sell it to Carmax or something?

Thank you!

They didn't fix it.

You paid $3k to have it fixed, which is a little crazy. Especially since all they did was replace a few $10 parts that take 20 minutes to put in. What do you think?

Do you think it’s fixable?

A tranny expert (real one not these guys) would have to look at it and see. Odds are no.

Thank you! I had a feeling it wasn’t gonna be good but didn’t have the heart to tell her, especially because she just paid the car off. Pretty bad timing to buy a new car.

sounds like something that might have been prevented by a thorough test drive and inspection, am I right? People always pay loads for a car and skimp on the checkup.

I don’t necessarily know the history of the car but do know that she goes for the cheapest fuel she can possibly get so…yes you’re absolutely right lol

this car is designed to run on regular gasoline. But you raise a valid point in that jerking could have nothing to do with transmission. Could simply be misfiring from plugged up fuel filter. Wouldn't surprise me a bit. She needs a competent trustworthy mechanic.
