Honda vs Nissan

I had a 2006 Honda Civic hybrid automatic with 210,000kms as my first car. Within a few months the hybrid battery needed to be replaced and was going to cost me a fortune. I got rid of it and bought a 2007 Honda Civic automatic with 180,000kms. After a few months I decided to get rid of the civic and buy a car from a dealer as I assumed a dealers car will last me longer. I got a 2009 Nissan Altima 2.5L automatic for $5500 with 130,000kms. I’ve owned it for just over a year and it’s been a decent car but I’ve had to deal with some minor leaks (typical on Nissan’s I assume). I can’t help but wonder now  if it would’ve been better if I had kept my 07 Civic instead which didn’t cause my any issues what so ever.

Honda's reliability has been going back and forth. It has not been stable (even with recent news). If your petrol Civic had no issues then it would have been ok. If you got good money for it, then that's a different story.

The Nissans use the Jatco CVT transmission which isn't the best because the belt snaps off which causes it to fail and costing thousands of dollars in repairs.

it could also fail with overheating as well as an addon

Since 2003 when Nissan introduced the cvt I have never seen a belt snap?

You probably should have, not all Altimas are bad but the one you have is kind of a mixed bag. The 2.5 4 cylinder engines are not as solid as the 3.5 VQ V6 engines and the weak point of the 4 cylinder Altimas mostly are the CVT transmissions. The V6 Altimas with CVTs didn't share anywhere the same amount of problems as the 4 cylinder models surprisingly. Just do your best with taking care of it and not beat the heck out of it, or just fix whatever needs to be done and maybe sell it and get something else.

I completely agree. My 3.5L Altima was solid and the CVT was still going well after 200,000KM

I would go Honda over Nissan any day. Especially if we are talking high mileage.
