How can I identify what is my root problem with my wife's misfiring 2010 Ford Escape V6? Codes are P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, pending P0018, pending P0011, historic fault P0021.

I first found that it was getting just a P0018 code and no misfire. It idled fine. I tried changing the bank 2 camshaft position sensor, and when that did not fix it, immediately after I was getting misfire codes, and rough idle in all 3 bank 1 cylinders (may have been a coincidence in the timing of the issue happening after the sensor change). I went and changed the crankshaft position sensor, and the bank 2 vvt solenoid. I also did an oil change. At this point it still had misfires, but it seemed like it was running fairly smooth at idle. I decided to take it in to a mechanic, and they checked the cam journals, and did not notice any excessive wear. They thought there might have been an issue with the vvt solenoid that I replaced, so i had them replace both while the valve covers were already off. After getting the vehicle back, the idle is rough, even after trying the idle relearn procedure. The mechanic's next step would have been to take out the cylinder head on bank 1, and see about machining them. I feel that might not be the right track.

I have noticed that the vehicle makes a bit of a rattling sound, but I have not had any P042x codes. Could this be a bad catalytic converter on bank 1 causing the misfires? There are a total of 3 cats on this vehicle.

Thanks,

Chris

Well those engines are kind of terrible as they wear out in age and it could be many things causing your problem including the ones you think it might be and others. I would advise finding a good mechanic like myself with fancy scan computers and software like automotive test solutions e-scan that with a simple test drive will computer analyze the vehicle and get a good idea if it's got a bad cylinder if it's got bad compression if the cats are bad it even has a program to test the cats by themselves. Start there
