[Solved] How do I get better MPG in my V10, 05 Excursion?

I bought a 2005, V10 excursion a month ago with 182k miles, and I love it. The only issue is the MPG. I did some quick estimates and mine is currently around 5 mpg when I drive to work in town. Is there any way to increase the MPG other than conservative driving? Even if it's 2 mpg more.

Check your air filter, clean your MAF sensor and throttle body. Hook up a scan tool to get your fuel trims and post them in your thread if they're a decent amount above or below 0%.

Other than those things, no, there's no genie in a bottle additive or plug-in to miraculously up your gas mileage. How you drive is probably the biggest factor in your MPG. A V10 is a gas guzzler, there's no way around it, let alone a V10 in an Excursion. It's an extremely heavy vehicle. Heavy vehicles have more energy when they move. They gotta get it from somewhere, and gas engines are only 25-30% efficient. Slam on the gas and brakes constantly? You're going to get terrible MPG. Keep the beast moving as much as you can once you've gotten it moving, you'll get decent MPG.

For example, is it hard to push a heavy appliance or cart full of bricks through the store once you've got it moving? No, you're only needing to counter friction. Is it hard to start and stop with your old lady while she shops and goes through the cleaning supply aisle? Of course. It's the same with a vehicle.

Drive sanely and coast to lights in town as much as possible, or take the highway and don't drive like a scaled ape. A former coworker got decent gas mileage in his Excursion on the highway when he'd drive it to Florida from Ohio.

Have you checked in our FAQ?

If you're after fuel economy, then you bought the wrong vehicle. A colossal SUV with the only V10 on the market.

I'm not after perfect fuel economy. I'm just trying to save a few bucks here and there.

@itwt , the King of Gifs!

Why write paragraphs, when a picture can speak a thousand words?

Tires might get you a little. Make sure they are inflated to the upper limit of spec, and if they are worn, replace them with good all season HT tires.

Don't you need a Boat Operator's License to drive one of these things?
