I have a question about changing oil

Hello everyone.

My dad bought a new car. He traded his 2002 VW Golf 1.9 TDI diesel (he bought it new 20 years ago) with 370,000 km and bought a brand new 2022 Golf. However; he got a gasoline TSI engine instead of a diesel.

It's a four cylinder 1.5 liter making 96 kw (130 hp) with a 6-speed manual transmission.

He always took great care of every car he has ever owned.

At the VW  dealership they told him to have the engine oil changed at 30,000 km.

We both disagree with such a high mileage for an oil change.

My dad downloaded an app on his phone and it says that the car will illuminate a warning on the dash once the oil change is due.

He wants to have it changed at 15,000 km. Does the software have to be reprogrammed somehow if the oil is changed "sooner"?

How does this work, please?

Thanks, Diana

Yeah, right. So they can sell you a new VW in 2 years..

I don't grok km. Oil and filter should be changed about every 5000 miles (or km equivalent) if you want the engine to last.

Cca 8k km.

No. Change it whenever you like. But you may need to reset some service indicator lights yourself.

30,000 km/18,641 miles for an oil change interval? That's incredulous.

The widely accepted and recommended oil and oil filter change interval is 5,000 miles or approximately 8,000 km.

To my knowledge, the service interval programmed into your car's computer at the factory cannot be altered. You will just need to reset the interval in your car's information center to prevent the pre-programed service indicator from illuminating on your dash.

I found this video that may help you with the reset.

Incredulous? Too many syllables. How about BOGUS? @avalon04

@Doc Well at least you knew what incredulous meant. I had to look up @ChuckTobias use of "grok" below, yet you gave him a pass. I suppose you moderators all stick together. 😉 But hey, you did give me an upvote.

De nada. I usually don't argue with one syllable words. @avalon04

30,000km is a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if the oil sludged up so bad it drained out in globs, and the car needed a new engine after that.
