Hello,
I have a 1997 Toyota 4Runner 4wd, with the 5vz-fe and a340F transmission. I just had the transmission replaced due to an explosion of a trans fluid cooling line in the radiator.
I’ve been having an acceleration issue for a few months since I drove through a car wash. I had the car in park until it prompted to engage in drive. I engaged in drive, though then an air blower engaged, there was a bump and I had to give it more gas than usual to move over it, but then I braked and went into reverse immediately to catch more of the dry blowers. I heard a deep rubber like screech sound from under the car.
I proceeded forward and out, when I got on the road though the car immediately began accelerating funny, as if something was resisting the engine. You could hear the engine try hard, but with not much success as it should. After some time the resistance became so strong the engine sputtered out and to keep the engine alive I had to tap the gas pedal lightly.
I brought it immediately to the best mechanic I know and they didn’t believe there was an acceleration problem. It eventually sputtered for him, though he attributed it to it starving for fuel. You can feel it especially right after a shift into 2 or 3 rd gear. When the car kicks into overdrive it doesn’t upshift as easy as it used to either is another thing I’ve noticed , while cruising at abt 50 mph for ex. Tends to lock it till it lugs or I lift my foot off the gas.
Transmission and transfer case can be eliminated I would think since completely different now, symptoms still the same. I don’t think the drum brakes self adjusted too tight because the car can still roll easy on a slight slope in neutral. Or I can push it easy on a flat surface.
Im so confused and lost as to what this could be. It’s like a paradox.
I would be willing to drive it to you if you have time Scotty and would be willing .
Any help please, I’m stumped this isn’t logical whatsoever. I’m not sure how to attach a picture, tho I have a pic of what I drove over
I drove through a car wash. I had the car in park
the automatic car washes I use require my transmission to be Neutral
It was a drive into and stop car wash, like those lazerwashes at some gash stations. Not a belt move thru
Since eit happened after the carwash, I think water got into electronics. Check the electrical connections under the hood.
I’ve done the valve cover gaskets since, everything was in check up top. What could have gotten fried from water in the engine bay?
Thank you so much for your help guys
It is a 25 years old car. I would check the electrical connections, fuse boxes, ... for water damage and make sure you have good connections.
Ok, I’ll give it a look around
