Hi Scotty,
Thanks for all your great videos! I have a manual 2002 Subaru Outback with 166,000 miles on it that's idling kind of funny. It's always fine when it starts up but when I'm sitting at a stoplight after the car is warm the idle will vary between 500 (or maybe even a little lower) and just under 1,000 rpm. It isn't bouncing back and forth - it'll usually sit comfortably for a little bit and then drop low, sit like that for several seconds and then you can hear something come on and the car will kick itself back up, repeating this cycle until I start moving again. 500 and 1,000 are also just the limits of the spectrum, it can also be anywhere in the middle. Sometimes the car will vibrate slightly (seemingly mostly from the passenger side dashboard) especially when RPMs are low, but it hasn't stalled out yet. Sometimes it'll also sit around 500 and not shake. I changed the air filter and cleaned the throttle body but it didn't fix it. Apparently the car doesn't have a MAF sensor. How serious is this? Any suggestions, or is this normal? Also, when the idle speed changes, the lights/display/ac blower will dim weaker or get stronger briefly.
Thanks!
You need to see if your IAC or idle air controller is working properly. Its job is to modulate and control the idle and keep it at a steady rpm via the ECM detecting RPM changes. Example you put the AC on..the ECM detects the AC to be engaged..it energizes the AC compresser..the load of the compresser slows the engine down..the moment the ECM detects the RPM declining it engages the IAC to air bleed the throttle intake to raise RPM to maintain the rpm what it was before the AC was commanded on.
Thanks for the help! Will check on this.
Load test your battery and alternator. If everything was fine, check your idle control valve. Apparently, your car has something called “air sensor “ which might be the source of issues you have
