How bad is the rust on your present Corolla? If it’s only superficial rust, and the drivetrain is in great shape, it might make it to 500,000 miles.

Unless bits of your car are falling off, I say hold onto your present Corolla.

It is always cheaper to keep'er.

Car sellers love a panicked buyer.

Watch Scotty’s videos on the rav4 vs crv and the Corolla vs Civic For year model information.

in your price range, You will find a lot of good running cars with dirty old, sometimes burned, transmission fluid. Walk away if it doesn’t look reddish or if it smells burned. Most of them in that price range, when you start driving them, will start showing their little problems. If you can get a good mechanic to check it out before you buy, do it. Otherwise, budget a significant amount of your money for catch up Maintenance and repairs. Brakes. Tires. Battery. Alternator, belts, hoses, thermostat, etc.

your present car will get you through this. Look every day at listings on Facebook marketplace and craigslist. Post on your social media that you are in the market. A friend might help you find something that is not on the market yet. Keep your mind open to vehicles that you may not have thought about.  I would rather have a well  maintained  Buick century than an abused Camry. Patience and consistency will win out in the end

Best wishes in your search.

If your Corolla runs well, is not burning oil, is shifting smoothly, and does not have severe (structural) rust you're better off keeping it. I wouldn't worry about cosmetic rust in the fenders or doors as long as they're not flapping in the breeze and everything is still solid underneath. If that car has been maintained then 233K miles is no big deal. Save your money and buy something else down the road when the market has gone back to some semblance of normalcy.

i would drive it easy and keep it

do you keep a spare car?

  • HELLO the rust is in the  back quarter manels rust is not superficial I can take some pictures also there is some leaks not sure rear main seal it drives good needs rear struts and about check engine light is in I change the oil as often as I can had timing belt looked at they told me it looks good

Seeing some pics would be helpful. Bear in mind that if it is just the outer sheet metal that's rusty it's still just cosmetic. My daily driver has a front fender so rusty that I have it patched up with metal tape. Looks terrible but I don't care, it still runs great with over 360,000 miles on it. Where rust is fatal is if unibody frame rails or suspension attachment points are rotted.

Leaks, depends on how bad they are, small drips are not a concern. Might even just be the valve cover gasket which is a simple fix. For check engine light we'd need to see codes to get an idea of what's going on. If you don't have an OBDII scanner most auto parts stores will check it for free. (I don't think you said how old the car is but I'm assuming it's 1996 or newer and has OBDII diagnostics.)

Find non rusted panels at your local junkyard & voila, problem solved. For the rest, listen to Chuck.

Sounds like you have a good read and sense about your cars condition which tells me you take decent care of it. Just ready it well before the winter with fresh fluids, plugs, filters and keep her alive! Corrollas are simple and long lived.

Ok guys just found 2009 Honda crv with 156k had it looked at from autotech/Goodyear where they had some services done they had both rear hubs replaced and new rotors pads sway bar I have the service records the women took me to get the tires rotated and I was able to look underneath I didn't see any oil leaks saw rust being in Chicago but nothing structurally she is willing take $ 6,250 what do you think ?

Hello what do you guys think of my purchase? I'm still holding on to the carolla and gonna get it fixed up a bit and drive the crv also but you were correct in saying if I am used to Toyota stick with Toyota and I will perhaps when this shortage is over I will sell the crv and get a Camry
