Intermittent passenger door sensor

Hi Scotty,

I listen to your videos every day and find them very informative and think it is great that you try to help so many people. I also enjoy your straightforward explanations a great deal. 😊

I have a 2018 Ford Mustang which I really like, but the passenger door lock sensor works intermittently. So sometimes when you put your fingers on the little lines on the handle the door will open, and other times the door just will not open. I have taken it into the dealer at least 5 times. Initially they suggested it was settings within the user screen, then they changed the entire handle, and the last time I took it in they told me the battery was reaching a stage of slightly lower than ideal charge which was causing the computer start to shut various things down in order to save battery charge.

This explanation arose when they were thinking about changing the body control module but wanted to do some more tests before doing so.

I find this a bizarre explanation as you would think that getting into the car was quite a high priority and not a lower priority that the computer could turn off to save power.

I asked the dealer if my battery needed changing and they said no it was sometimes reaching a charge state where it started to drop at times but the battery was in good condition and still functioning perfectly. They suggested this arose because a lot of My trips was only short distance. Their solution was that I should take a long drive once a week to ensure the battery charge maintained a high-level.

To check if what they were saying was correct I selected battery voltage to be displayed on the screen in the car. so I could see the voltage all the time when I was driving. And it is usually sitting at 14 volts but occasionally, and only occasionally, has dropped down to 13.5 volts.

Is the dealer conning me do you think? Or is their explanation valid

Thank you very much

the battery voltage will always be normal while driving. The voltage you should be interested in is when the vehicle is off.

Computers control absolutely everything in vehicles these days, so it could very well be that.

It is computer controlled. I've owned 2 S550 Mustangs and both did it. Ford's keyless entry/exit system is just simply not that good. Both my '19 Charger R/T and my '20 Accord have the same feature and work perfectly.
