Hi Scotty,
I drive a manual BYD F3 2011. It's basically a cheap copy of the Toyota Corolla with a Mitsubishi engine. I inherited it after my father died and I love it so much. I was asking if it is possible to get the right parts, reposition the engine, and convert it from FWD to AWD, or RWD if AWD is not possible.
Thank you in advance. I wish you all the best. Live long and prosper.
Anything is possible.
The process will only cost you about 10x what the car is worth.
Can it be done? Yes.
Do you have tens of thousands of dollars to cover the custom fabrication required to complete a conversion like that?
IMO, it isn't worth doing.
The only vehicle I've seen commonly converted from 2WD to 4WD is the old 1984-2001 Jeep Cherokee, and those are old-school rear drive with relatively easy to swap components from the 4WD models. To do that conversion on a modern front-drive vehicle is going to take considerable custom fabrication and engineering.
I wonder if this project has ever been attempted on any Chinese copycat sedan? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_F3
