I currently drive a Chrysler Sebring 2007 (with the infamous 2.7L V6...) with 92XXXKM (57XXX miles). As expected, the car doesn't run so great: the engine burns a lot of oil, the transmission shifts a bit harsh sometimes, the car is noisy and I have an evap leak somewhere (but I don't really care about this problem).
I know this elderly couple that is looking to sell their Toyota Sienna 2006 with 101XXXkm (63XXXMiles).
I asked my mechanic his thoughts about buying the Toyota and he told me he is generally not a fan of "upgrading" to an older car, even if it is a Toyota.
Assuming the frame of the Sienna is not all rusty (I did a test drive of the car but I haven't looked underneath it yet), is there any reasons why I shouldn't buy it ? I'm trying to understand my mechanic's logic...
I do agree with him in the "general" sense that it usually means trading in one problem for another.
In this case, it could be a good decision, depending on mileage, condition etc.
Have your mechanic look it over to make sure it isn't a can of worms.
If and I'll emphasize on the "IF" the Sienna is in good condition and given the mileage on it isn't that high I would definitely prefer it over a Chrysler product you're already having issues with. Just make sure it checks out and doesn't have any issues/the car is okay. I won't go solely based off of it being a year older than your Chrysler; you need to consider the mileage and situation of the car too.
The Sienna has 101,000km (or 63,000miles). I know they always maintained it at the dealer. But they haven't any major maintenance on it yet; I asked them and they told me it still has the original timing belt (Toyota started to use timing chain in their Sienna in 2007...).
On the other hand, I don't mind investing a bit of money on preventive maintenance if the van can last me 10-12 years (I really don't drive much) trouble free.
Yeah the mileage isn't that high for that car and if it checks out by your mechanic and needs only the minimum maintenance to get it in good condition then to me it's better than the Chrysler for sure.
