Is the “MAINT REQD” light a cash grab.

2009 Toyota Camry, AT, 98,xxx miles.

This is my moms car. And is only driven a few times a year. Once a year I take it in to get the oil changed. This past week my sister came in town to visit and used it to drive around. While driving it the “MAINT REQD” light came on. It’s only been driven a few times since it’s last oil change this past November. Should I take it in or can I just wait until the next oil change since it’s not going to be used much?

It’s a dilemma. Yes, … and No. This problem arises with cars lightly used: … time factor vs. milage factor, … Hmmn?

In your case, I would ignore the light, … just turn it off - there is a simple procedure. But, … there is always but:

As any car is parked, not used, … it deteriorates: tires, liquids, greases, plastics, seals, gaskets, rubbers, et. al. In your case, I suggest that changing oil once a year is OK, … but you should have a thorough inspection done to a car, … say, yearly, too. It all goes like this: "everything is fine, … until it is not". It is that not that you want to avoid. fwiw.

I concur.

it's meant to remind you of a maintenance item. All cars require maintenance.

Does it tell you that it's service item #1, 2 etc. or A, B, C etc?

Did you crack open your manual to see if something might be due?
