I have a 2012 Suzuki I've been told the piston ring has gone bad. The mechanic is charging $5,500 to replace the engine. I don't have that kind of money. I'll do the work of changing the rings myself , but most YouTube video only show people speeding through removing engines and parts. Is there a good detail video that shows how to breakdown and rebuild an engine? Is there a video that shows how to get to the piston without removing the engine from the car? If not can someone do a video showing how to breakdown an engine to replace piston rings.
What’s the exact car model and engine displacement?
Engine rebuilds aren't as easy as you're thinking they are. Assuming the piston rings really are all that's worn, you would at minimum need to get at the bottom of the engine to do the replacement. Crossmembers are probably in the way, which means taking the engine off the mounts and raising it up. Unless you have a hoist, it's not really possible to do on your own. If you had that kind of hardware, you'd be much better off just swapping the engine yourself.
This topic has been brought up before in the past, general consensus is that just replacing something like rings isnt worth it. It's ALOT of work just to get to the rings, and its not like theyre the only components that wear. Bearings, lifters, cams, valve guides/seals, headgaskets.... theres alot of parts that are probably not too far behind it, not to mention the transmission. Youre better off getting a new engine, or even better a new car really, car isnt worth the repair. Either try to sell it or just drive it until you cant.
