And I guess that means you don't know if the transmission even works. At 170k is going to be near end of life.
What's the condition of the vehicle? It's pretty old so there is going the be a lot of worn out stuff. How's the rust?

The engine is about $500 It doesn't have much rust and the people that owned before had it in a garage and claim everything works but the engine the entirior is in prestine condition
well hopefully they're honest people. Otherwise who knows how this will turn out.
It might work out OK if you can find a good low-mileage used engine and install it yourself. If you have to pay a mechanic I'd scrap the thing and cut your losses while they're still low.
