Jatco CVTs - have they improved. Getting a "new" one. Dump the car?

Hi

My daughter has a 2017 Lancer with 85,000 KM on it. The CVT went out on it. The dealer, after much delay, got the Ok to replace it under warranty. We weren't the first owner and it hadn't been serviced - at least no records. Thank god for the warranty as a new one, just the tranny, is $15,000 Canadian to buy. It will have a 1 year replacement part warranty.
I’ve read that this CVT, Jatco I believe, which Nissan and Mitsubishi has used had issues and doesn’t seem to last long. There are even some class action law suites.

Will a "brand new" one be any better than what was in it? Have they made changes to this CVT or did they just stop using it? How could I tell if it is new or just old stock?  Will it actually be a new CVT - I heard they don't make them anymore so it will be a rebuilt one??

Would you dump the car and get something else? In all other respects it’s a decent car as far as I can tell, but if I can’t trust the tranny…

Thanks for the help.

Dump it after it's fixed before the "new" (probably refurbished) CVT craters on you. (It will likely be exactly the same CVT since a newer model would need computer changes.)

No.

At ~50k miles, it's a bit early for it to go out, but 90% of the time premature failures are due to driving style.

Have they made changes to this CVT or did they just stop using it?

No and No. It was updated in 2015, since then, no new serious changes made to the Jatco JF015E.

Why would they stop using these? It's a great money maker! It sells cars.

They have other models of CVT transmissions, that have gotten somewhat better, and yet It's still not good.

You'll have to talk with the dealer.

If it's rebuilt (which is unlikely), dump the car asap.

Would you dump the car and get something else?

Depends on what you can get for it.

If it's enough for you to easily upgrade to a Corolla / Mazda3 - sure why not.

Otherwise? It's a car with a brand new transmission...

I would dump it after getting a new transmission installed.  I would not hold my breath that the “new” one is any better than the old one.  Since you have a 1 year warranty, then you have up to 1 year (and realistically a little longer than that) to find something else.

Just as everyone else said get the new transmission for free and then sell it and get something reliable. Used car prices are high now so you'll probably be able to get some good money for it you can put towards something better. Consider a Corolla, Civic, Camry, or Accord.
