Jeep Patriot issues

Topic starter

My Jeep Patriot had the usual CVT transmission failure at 169k miles. I drove it sputtering into the driveway, put it in park and the engine was running fine. Had my mechanic put on a new starter and it wouldn't start. Car is cranking over very slow and won't start. New battery, new starter, and cranking over slow, mechanic says engine is shot and it also needs replaced. Motor is still cranking over slow. New engine or electrical issue? 2010 Patriot, 4wd, 2.4 engine, and CVT automatic. Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't be surprised if it does need a motor. I've not personally seen one of those even close to 200k without needing a rebuild. Sounds like it may just be worn out and it's time.

Those are not nearly as durable as older Jeeps like the Cherokee with 4.0 and Aisin-Warner transmission. Probably time to move on.

Check the Relay box. Jeep Patriots have commonly had a major problem where the fuse goes. I had to change the wires in my fuse box twice. I got a new Relay box off an old patriot from a scrap yard for $100 and it started right up. Mechanics with these cars commonly change the battery & starters and even ignition coils but fail to realize that its the relay box. Look into it. I had a 08 Patriot sport. Bought it for $3000 in 2014 with 90k miles on it. I drove it to 180k before getting rid of it for 1500. It served me well. It still shifts like a dream but has engine knock. I used STP and Engine Restore which added some life to it. Id just junk the car if the Relay idea doesn't work. Let me know.
