A lot of security comments about Key Fobs suggests inserting them in RF packages / sleeves. Is there anyone providing a slide switch on these FOBS shutting them off to prevent their constant transmission of RF? My car is a 2012 Lincoln MKX with 70K miles. Thinking of trading it for the new Ford Hybrid, your thoughts?
Keep up the good work.
Mike
Clarification: trading in for which Ford Hybrid?
I haven't seen switches on remotes, but that's something to consider if you own an exotic or expensive car.
RFID key fobs typically do not transmit, they are passive devices powered magnetically by the scanner/receiver that reads them. They only transmit actively when buttons are pressed to lock or unlock doors, etc. (If they transmitted continuously the batteries would not last very long!)

That used to be the case.
I think that with new cars -- the ones that unlock when you approach them -- the FOBs do transmit.
High tech thieves are able to sneak up to your house, record the signals, then go up to your car, replay the signal and unlock the car. There is footage of them doing this. It requires some capital and know-how , so for now they're only targeting high value cars.
Sounds like yet another reason (aside from being a cheapskate) to drive an old beater. 🙂
