Should I change my ATF

Scotty, I know that you have covered this subject before but I’m going to ask for a clarification. I have a 2006 Ford Mustang GT with 160,000 miles and a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara with 120,000 miles. Both have been very dependable but I want to drop the automatic transmission fluid, replace the filters and put new fluid back in WITHOUT FLUSHING the transmissions. Am I courting a possible major problem. Love you videos and I’m glad to hear that you’ve settled in comfortably in the great state of TN! {black}:smile:

This is a question we get all the time and quite honestly I’m gonna toss a question back to you and all those who ask it. Why would someone with a 160k on one vehicle and 120k on another and ask this question now? The number one cause of transmission failure is not changing the fluid sooner. Why is it they we’re programmed to change our engine oil and avoid the transmission fluid. My opinion would be if the fluid looks clean do a full exchange including filter. Ultimately it’s your decision....if it were to go bad either way it’s because you failed to change it earlier. Good Luck.....

You are courting disaster by not servicing your transmissions, and risking a plugged up filter.

Change your fluid + filter before it's too late, and you completely ruin your transmission.

If it IS too late, and your transmission is already slipping or shifting poorly, then yes, changing it now could just finish it off.

My take: A proper service will never hurt a transmission. It might reveal a problem that already existed, but that problem comes from lack of timely fluid and/or filter exchanges. 

BTW, if and when you pull the dipsticks, what does the fluid look and smell like?
