Kia/Hyundai timing belt to chain conversion

Hey Scotty, I don;t like timing belts but I do like the Telluride/Palisade. I read that there is now a kit to replace the belt with a chain. Do you know if this is true and if so, is it Kia/Hyundai approved as to not void their warranties?

Never heard of that. Unless Kia/Hyundai provides the kit and a dealer installs it I would expect the warranty to be void. It would be a huge job not only involving the sprockets and chains but chain guides and tensioners, as well as any accessories such as the water pump that might be driven from the timing belt.

If those vehicles have timing belts (most have chains these days) the best thing to do really is just change the belt on schedule. There's a lot more to worry about with Kia/Hyundai vehicles than a timing belt:

Myth.

Where did you read it?

It won't help with the multitude of design problems the Lambda engine has ...

  • high oil consumption
  • stuck/seized piston rings
  • carbon build-up on intake valves

The engine is reported to last around 150k miles (that's with regular service), and it's not because of the belt.
