Hi folks, 

2011 Kia picanto, 50k miles, standard transmission.

Ignition key will often turn so far but will not turn far enough to turn ignition on/start engine. With enough wiggling and cursing will eventually go but it's a hassle to do. This includes wiggling the steering wheel as well.

Tried spraying with wd40 but to no avail.

Mechanic said probably need to replace drum but would cost £600 to get Kia to reprogram.

Someone suggested that a start button could be fitted to bypass the drum but I'm not sure how this would work.

Any ideas what else to try or any input on the start button idea? Cheers

Edit: it's not the steering lock because that will come on and off as normal.
