Transmission whines

Scotty,

Love your show.

You did a video a while back about a Kia that was making a winding, whining noise from the transmission. You said you weren’t able to figure out what it was and that the dealership said it’s normal.

My car has the same problem, but I don’t know what to do about it. Can’t trade it in for new car because they cost an arm and a leg.

Were you ever able to find out what it is?

Any suggestions on what to do?

Which video are you referring to?

You probably have an internal problem within the transmission. You didn't say the mileage on that car but the transmission is on its way out. Options are put in a remanufactured transmission, put in a junkyard transmission or junk the car entirely. I would junk the car because it's not worth putting money on a Kia.

Take the car to a transmission pro and have him check it.

Replace the transmission fluid, should be cheap and simple on these.

Here's a table with the type and quantity for all Kia cars:

If you have a conventional auto and happens bellow 5 mph (8 km/h), it's probably just how the torque convertor sounds on these.

Don't these have a 10 year / 100k mile powertrain warranty? I'd check wether it's still active and not void.

Some forum members were able to trade in their old cars for just a bit under what a new one costs, so I'd still check how much it'd be to trade for a Camry.

Used car prices are high these days so see what you can get for this car before deciding on fixing it. It's very likely you can get enough for it so you can buy a Camry or Accord at msrp. Just remember for msrp in this market best bet is buying from a dealerships incoming allocation rather than buying from an on the lot unit.
