2000 Ford Excursion a good buy?

Hey Scotty,

Love your Channel. I am looking at a 2000 Ford Excursion with the 6.8 V10 at a dealership. It has 97,000 miles, and they’ve shown me the history proving it’s legit. I could send it to you if you would like as well as the link to it on the dealership website. We went to test drive it the other day, but the power steering wasn’t working. We started it up, and it sounded good. They are putting the work order in to fix it. They are going to lift it up for me to check out the frame when I go back to test drive. I only live 2 hours from you and would love for you to check it out for  me. They even offered for me to take it for a couple days to take it to a mechanic to check out, but given we live an hour and a half away from the dealership (other direction from you), I’m only off on weekends, and I work nights, that’s not really possible. So my question is, what should I look for? I’ve seen these with this engine for sale with 200-300k miles. I don’t plan on it being a daily driver. Mostly once or twice a week. My wife and I are expecting our third child, and this will be my vehicle if I needed pick up or take the kids places while my wife has our van. We would probably use it on the weekend and maybe drive it to work once a week which is all highway to keep it driven. Any advice of what to look for or what to do or upkeep would be appreciated. I was wondering about putting that liquid in that you said rejuvenates the rubber seals as a preventative measure. It doesn’t leak at this point, and I change oil in our vehicles we very 5,000miles like clockwork. It is also a 4x4.

  • I personally am not a fan of a 22-year-old Ford excursion because of that age they generally start to have serious electrical problems up the wazoo. Realize the excursion is a high-end vehicle and it's not a good idea to buy luxury high-end American vehicles when they're 22 years old

Hey Scotty. Thank you for responding to me personally. I know how busy you must be and questions you must get. So you could elaborate a little on what kind of electrical problems these can have? I’m not the best versed in car systems aside from what I’ve seen in your videos lol. Also since you don’t care about the Ford Excursions, what do you think about the Ford Expedition EL with the 5.4 V8 instead, and how long can they last? Thanks.

Don't trust anything a dealership tells you or shows you to "prove" their claims about a vehicle they're looking to unload.

The dealership is a rip off.  Nothing they tell you or show you is true.  What warranty are they offering on this vehicle, if it's so good?

Is there any specific reason you want a extremely large SUV?

My wife and I are about to have our 3rd child. So we will have 2 in car seats and 1 in a booster. So it will be too tight on a single bench seat. So we need a 3rd row. My wife drives a van but if she’s working and I have to pick up the kids, I need a vehicle of my own that will hold them all. I’ve always wanted an excursion and seeing one with low mileage seemed to fit the bill. Plus it would be nice to have a 4x4 as well.

If you need a three row SUV, consider a Toyota Sequoia. At least you know that they can last a really long time with much less maintenance than the Excursion.

I would love to get one, but they are way out of what I can afford right now. We bought a Sienna van last year based on what I learned from Scotty, and that’s my wife’s daily driver. That’s the biggest reason my mind went back to the excursion after seeing the lower mileage on it. Anything Toyota these days are extremely expensive. Granted their quality is amazing. I wish I was able to afford one. I definitely don’t want a suburban.
