Looking At A New Sporty Car

Hi Guys/Scotty,

I have a 2019 Civic Touring with 19000kms automatic, and I want a sportier car in the near future. When I bought my Civic, I was not planning to do any modifications so I extended the warranty but I changed my mind and I want a new sporty car (preferably a coupe). I’m planning on doing mods on it right when I get my hands on in. I don’t know how to drive stick, and I’d like to get a car with some safety features for longer drives. I’ve been looking at the 2022 Toyota 86 a lot lately, but I’m concerned that because it’s a Boxer engine, it might be unreliable. I’d ideally like something reliable but a lot of fun! I appreciate your help!

To Summarize: I’m looking for a new automatic sporty car/coupe to mod, that is reliable, looks good, and is fun to drive.

I appreciate all your responses! I got some extremely helpful feedback from you guys! I have actually turned my head away from the 86, and I am planning on waiting for the pricing for the new 2022 Acura TLX Type S! I will give up the idea of modding the car (as it would be stupid to do so) and I think it would be a great ride. If it does not work out I think an old Miata that I can mod out would a good idea to pair with my Civic.

If you have any comments, don’t be afraid to share!

A car to mod & is reliable is kind of an oxymoron..

I’d recommend you either -

Learn to drive a manual, then go buy a Civic type R.

Or

Buy a used Miata which you can modify, yet hold onto your present Civic..

All the best!

The first model year following a redesign is always a bit of a crap shoot regarding reliability. But frankly the new BRZ/86 is likely to be fine and probably a great little car.
It has a simple, naturally aspirated FA20 motor, which has been an extremely reliable platform since it came out several years ago. The 22 supposedly has been tuned to eliminate the notorious “torque dip” of the previous model, along with adding a few hp overall.
The FA20 series was designed with tuners in mind, so it is very easy to modify and service. And unless you do something stupid, it should be a reasonably reliable driver.

Fast and reliable? That's usually an expensive combination.

An older Mustang (2005-2010) with a V8 could be very fun, cheap, and pretty reliable if you take care of it.

The Acura you are looking at is sporty but yeah, DON'T modify it. You'll want to keep your warranty intact.

By fun you mean speed, then that wouldn't be the right car. Those cars look sporty... That's about it lol

There is a  sport tuned 296 HP Toyota Corolla coming out next year that will likely be AWD, I might get one

The RAV4 Prime is the second fastest car Toyota builds (fastest if you consider the Supra a BMW).

I wouldn't buy a Toyota 86, as they are not all that fast. I would highly recommend looking at a Miata since those IMO are the best sports cars on the market. You could also look at a Civic Type R which are real screamers, a wrx for that AWD grip, or you can look at the upcoming Toyota GR Corolla.

What about Boxer engines have you heard being unreliable?

they can last a rlly long time but do they require more maintenance than a Toyota
