Shop owner and Master Mechanic The Car Wizard recently discussed a head gasket replacement on a 2016 Mazda CX-9 with the 2.5L turbo 4-cylinder engine.  I just about fell out of my seat watching it.  This left a bad taste in my mouth for Mazda.
.

Anyways, not sure if this is a Mazda design issue and/or if they fixed it by now, but something to be aware of.  Also, make sure your car does not overheat in the first place.

Well that's terrible 4 cylinder engines for you. That's why I tell people not to buy them. They stress the engine a lot and then they blow cost a fortune to fix them

I am not surprised, at all.

I've been talking about it for a while - modern cars aren't built with repair in mind.

The Highlander requires the entire front subframe to be dropped to separate the engine from the tranny.

Also to the "Wizard's" knowledge the "black plastic thing" at ~18:30 is a thing that almost any modern engine has and it alters and increases the flow near the top of the cylinder.

What I'm concerned about is that it hasn't measured the bores of the cylinders. It has 17.4 psi of boost and a 10.5 compression ratio on a super thin aluminum block - It would've been informative as to how much it has already warped.

Also, as far as I saw, he didn't specify the millage or the reason for the head gasket failure...

There are still cars that are built to be repaired.

On my car I can remove the entire engine in under 10 minutes - because the hood has enough working space.
