Hi, I'm looking to learn to drive stick.

Currently a student so I'm looking for something reliable and cheap that would become my daily driver. Budget is under $5000. Was thinking older Honda civic, or maybe a VW golf?

What would you suggest?

I'd look at a Miata or a Mazda 3 if you find a decent one. Both are in the "reliable doesn't mean it can't be fun" category.

I would steer clear of VW

Unless it's a 1971 Beetle.

@doc my cousin has one. When it's snowing outside and you open the vent then snow comes in the cabin 😆 It's very loud. Fun car to drive though. (not to maintain)

Corolla, Civic, Miata - for your budget, they will be high mileage and probably multiple owners so be sure an independent, honest mechanic thoroughly checks it out first.

Corolla and Civic are good choices. Unlike VW, they are reliable and cheap to fix if they break.

If Civics are tough to find in your area, you might keep an eye out for a stock (not modified) Acura Integra or Acura RSX. Both are Honda products, 4 cylinder engine, similar body size as Civics and are available with manual transmission.
