Hey Scotty
i have a 2010 Lexus RX350 with 220km on it. Been a great car but recently I started to have some issues. Had some chirping noises which morphed in to a loud whine after a start in the winter. Mechanic replaced a few pulleys and finally decided that it was the alternator. Btw, I didn’t have any of the tell tale ‘dying alternator’ issues like dead battery etc.
All seemed fixed until the weather got below 0°C. Regardless of whether I plug in my car or not, I will get a loud whine from (front passenger side) engine. It is there when I start it and when I drive & can last a few seconds or even minutes. It doesn’t change in tone as I put it in gear or drive it. It seems to stop once the car is warmed up….never to be heard again until the next cold start. It does NOT do this in the summer.
The car does not have any codes and isn’t leaking anything. I used synthetic 0W30 oil and have kept up maintenance. The car heats well and the blower fan doesn’t make noise.
I’m stumped and I’d rather drink wine than hear whining. Gotta any clue?
thanks for reading!

An alternator can work fine electrically, even though the bearing is worn out.
Does the sound go away if you remove the belt?
No change but super tricky to do because it’s cold and the sound doesn’t last long. And when I say cold I mean Canada Winter. We tried that first thing.
could be the water pump then
I’ll check, thanks. Will let cha know
