What should I fix first

I bought a 1993 Dodge Caravan for $1400 with less than 80k miles. Smog papers and title in hand, it belonged to the state as an inmate transport and was put on non op for unknown years as it was broke into and I believe some things were stolen out of it. The back window is gone and it has bad weather stripping and the floor is always damp but has no smell. The heater works but is stuck on defrost, the transmission seems okay but clunks BAD cold, warm it shifts fine. I did not expect half of these problems when I purchased it from a private seller. It is also my first vehicle (not financed). There's quite a few problems but what should I get looked at first?? I don't make much money but enough to replace something if needed. Thanks.

It really should have been looked at and evaluated before purchase. Being 30 years old it's already way past its expected service life.

Since the transmission is already acting up that's probably going to be the most important thing. If it fails that vehicle is scrap and those are known to be weak transmissions. See the site FAQ for details on the issues around changing transmission fluid to see if it's a good idea in your case. Other than that I'd check normal maintenance items like filters and spark plugs and check rubber hoses and bushings for deterioration.

I know that was my fault. I needed to get out of a car payment and that was my only option. So far I checked oil. It's good but low, though idk what kind of oil it takes. I'm assuming 5w-30? Spark plugs I haven't got to yet it seems like it's a hassle. It's a 3L v6 of course smh

The owner's manual should specify the oil if not on the oil cap or engine compartment sticker but it's probably 5W20 or 5W30. (Manuals are available online if you don't have one.)

I'll check the manual first thing in the morning! Problem is I don't get paid in 5 days so I'm sure the van will do fine until I get some oil. Will update afterwards. Thx Chuck

I found what oil it takes but my biggest issue is trying to find a back window for it. It's been impossible for me. Any luck?

For something that old you're most likely going to need to find used glass in a junkyard. Try https://www.car-part.com/ to search multiple sources.

Maybe if you clean it up nicely, you can flip it for a bit of profit.

Just do the engine oil & filter frequently (3-5k).

Potentially a new trans filter too. Dont do the fluid. Give the car a few extra minutes to warm up if that helps the transmission, and of course don't rag on it.

The other issues you stated aren't worth fixing IMHO

I agree also I have the van inspected in the morning to see what needs what. Will update you after 🤙
