No. BMW's are not cheap to own.

No, they all are expensive to maintain and repair, even the better built ones.  If you are a master tech that works on BMWs - you would already have a huge leg up since you can do most (if not all) the repairs/maintenance yourself.

I owned a hand me down 2006 BMW X5 from 2016-2020, driving from about 160K miles to 200K+ miles.

I also currently own a 1999 Honda Accord since the beginning, now at about 270K+ miles.

For perspective, I spent way more money maintaining the BMW X5 in 4 years of ownership, than 20+ years of ownership with my Honda Accord.

BMW's are amazing vehicles.  I loved the way the X5 performed.  And how smooth it drove.  But it cost me an arm, leg, and torso. Unless you are handy enough to do the work yourself, the cost to maintain them is insane.  Parts alone for BMW's are insanely priced.

If I had a slush fund, I'd probably still be driving a BMW, or even venture to get a BMW as my next car.  But I don't have such a slush fund, so reliable and cheaper to maintain is the name of the game.  And that usually goes to Honda or Toyota.

Depends on whether you can do the work yourself and know of a good place to obtain parts for cheap. The M series are significantly more expensive and complex to work on compared to their normal series.

fcpeuro.com is a great place to get BMW parts for cheap (both OEM and OEM quality). They even have a lifetime replacement warranty on the parts you buy from them, including oil changes 😁. So once you buy their transmission oil change kit, you get all your subsequent ones for free granted you return the old stuff to them. It's really awesome.
